Glossary
4×6 Printing:
4 x 6 printing is available in almost all the printers and HP introduced this capability. This helps in the printing of the photos which are of snap shots size.
All-in-One:
All in one scheme is widely available in all the printers in which components like fax, print, copy, scanners are included in a single machine.
Anti-aliasing:
Anti aliasing can be defined as a process of removing distortions which are jagged in curves and lines. This makes those diagrams to appear smooth.
Automatic Document Feeder:
The Automatic Document Feeder is tray which allows the paper to be placed for the printing process.
Black Print Speed:
Black print speed is the maximum speed at which the black text can be printed. The speed of printing is measured in pages per minute which is abbreviated as PPM.
Borderless Printing:
This printing option is available in all the printers which print the photos on the paper without any white spaces on the border making it look like the photo that has been printed straight from lab.
Charging Roller:
Charging rollers are the complex system of rollers which are typically present in the laser printers which transfers electrical charge to photo conductor.
CMYK:
CMYK is the acronym for cyan, magenta, yellow and black which are the basic colorants used in digital imaging.
Cartridge:
Cartridge is the sealed unit which holds the ink for printing. The cartridge can be black or colour.
Corona Wires:
These are the thin wires inside the laser printer having the ability to transfer the charge to the printing paper and in turn it attracts the toner to the paper.
Dedicated Print Server:
A dedicated computer system present in the network for the management of all the printers.
Dot Matrix:
These kind of printers are present in the early days which uses pin to transfer the ink from the ribbon to paper. They have poor quality when compared to the laser and ink jet.
Driver:
Driver is the software which comes with the printer for the installation of the device to the computer. They usually come in CD.
Enhanced Parallel Port:
Enhanced Parallel Port is abbreviated as EPP which is a international standard develpod for the bidirectional transfer via PC’s parallel port.
Firewire:
Firewire is otherwise called IEEE 1394 which is a high speed data transfer interface used on printers for the high speed data transfer between computer and the device.
Fuser Roller:
These are used in laser printers so that it heats the paper and melts the toner making it stick on the paper giving it a permanent bond.
HP:
HP is the Hewlett Packard which is the company manufacturing all in one printers. Not only printers they also manufacture Desktops, Laptops etc.
IEEE 1284:
It is the international design specification for the parallel printer cables which helps in bidirectional transfer.
Inkjet Printer:
These are the printers which gives out tiny nozzles of ink onto the page which are fast drying forming character shapes and images. These printers give high quality images.
Integrated Printhead:
It is shortly called as IPH where the print head is integrated into a ink jet cartridge. It is also described as the tricolor cartridges.
Jetdirect Print Server:
This allows the user to position the printers anywhere which is provided with network capability without cords.
Laser Printer:
Laser printer is the device which uses electricity and heat to bond the toner particles onto the paper. This gives high quality printing.
Monochrome Printer:
Monochrome printers are the outdated printers which prints only one color. Usually black is the color for printing.
Paper Capacity:
It refers to the number of paper that the Automatic Document Feeder can hold.
Paper Guides:
Paper guides helps in positioning the paper properly in the Automatic Document Feeder according to the size of the paper. Adjustable paper dividers are used for this purpose.
Print Buffer:
Print buffer refers to the spooler which holds the printing jobs in queues to be dispatched to the printer one after the other.
Printhead:
This holds the nozzles that are needed for the proper ejection of the ink to the paper. These are widely used in ink jet printers.
Print Resolution:
The printer resolution indicates the quantity of data that can be printed on the paper which are typically measured in dots per inch(dpi).
Print Zone:
The print zone is the portion of the paper that the printer is able to print on. Usually it will be assigned by the user in the print setting option.
Printer Command Language:
Printer Command Language is abbreviated as PCL developed by HP for its usage in laser and ink jet printers.
Printer Emulation:
This is similar to a simulation which enables a printer which is new to act like an older one thus the setting can be easily shifted to the newer one.
Random Access Memory:
RAM is the Random Access Memory which is the temporary storage holding the data for the printing job which is present in the printer.
Speed:
It tells about the efficiency of the printer that how quickly it is able to process and print the content on the paper. It is measure in Pages per Minute (PPM).
Separate Ink and Silicon:
Separate Ink and silicon, shortly called as SIS is the system in which the print head resides.
Universal Serial Bus:
This represent the interface on the printer through which data from the computer to the printer travel in high speed manner.
